July 13, 2022 -

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), in ongoing efforts to help consumers make informed choices regarding their electric provider, has launched the first phase of its California Electric Rates Comparison Website.

The California Electric Rates Comparison Website is available at: www.cpuc.ca.gov/RatesComparison.

In certain areas of California, electricity is provided by either an investor-owned utility (e.g., Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric) or a Community Choice Aggregator, and consumers have a choice between energy providers.

The Electric Rate Comparison Website, created under Assembly Bill 1362 (2019, O’Donnell), offers residential consumers a side-by-side comparison of current electric rates that are available to them from investor-owned utilities and Community Choice Aggregators.

Consumers can search for investor-owned utility and Community Choice Aggregator rate information using either a zip code, city, county, or the provider’s name. From there, they will have access to a “Joint Rate Mailer” that the utility and Community Choice Aggregator have prepared that provides rates and other information.

The Electric Rate Comparison Website includes links to assistance programs such as California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE) and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

The next phase of the Electric Rate Comparison Website with additional functionality will launch in early 2023.

The CPUC regulates services and utilities, protects consumers, safeguards the environment, and assures Californians’ access to safe and reliable utility infrastructure and services. For more information on the CPUC, please visit www.cpuc.ca.gov.
