The CPUC began the process to introduce a new area code to the 657/714 area code, as the supply of available prefixes in the 657/714 area code region is expected to be depleted by March 2027. Pending approval by the CPUC, the new area code will be introduced on top of the 657/714 area code region.

Background

The 213 area code, created in 1947, originally covered all of southern California. The 714 area code was created when it was split off the 213 area code in 1951. The 714 area code was split again in 1982, 1992, and 1998 and the 619, 909, and 949 area codes were introduced. The 714 area code needed additional numbering resources and the California Public Utilities Commission approved an overlay of the 714 area code and the 657 area code was to be introduced in October 2000 but due to number conservation measures, the 657 was implemented on September 23, 2008. The 657/714 area code region is predominantly in Northern Orange County with a small portion in Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties.
